Observation Narrative
This plot documents a small remnant of relatively undisturbed oak-hickory forest on the upper slope of Davey Land Ridge. Medium- to large-diameter Quercus montana, Q. alba, and Carya glabra dominate the canopy over a nearly monospecific sub-canopy of Acer rubrum. Shrubs are sparse, but the herb layer is species-rich with a mixture of xerophytic and mesophytic species. Much of the adjacent forest on this ridge has been heavily disturbed by cutting and/or grazing and is now over-run by thickets of Smilax and numerous exotic weeds.
